The Federal Government has approved a new drug application for the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra that would be used in men under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional, the Government announced.
In its application, the Government says it has determined that Viagra is “recommended” for use in patients with an enlarged prostate and has shown that the drug does not pose a significant risk to an unborn child.
The drug was previously approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men, but has not been approved in all men to treat symptoms of prostate cancer.
The application is pending before the Federal Drug Administration, and the Government has not yet issued a response.
“The approval of the drug application is a step forward for the government and the public to take into account the factors that determine whether or not the drug is appropriate for the treatment of an enlarged prostate and whether or not it may be used for a second or third indication,” said Janet Woodcock, secretary of health, for the Department of Health and Human Services, on condition of being presented with the application.
“This approval is a step forward in the ongoing fight against the widespread and devastating spread of prostate cancer.”
